My little shadow

July 16, 2017

Tripawds is a user-supported community. Thank you for your support!

My beautiful little girl Sophie is only 4 and a half months old and has already been through so much in her short life.

I rescued Soph when she was just 4 weeks and 6 days old. She had been separated from her mother since she was 2 weeks old and was fed only weetbix and cows milk. Her tiny little tail was bent/broken in 2 places and i couldnt leave her in the environment she was in any longer… So i rescued her!

I took her home and fed her, bathed her, wormed her and flea treated her… but most of all i showed her love, something she had never known…. Like me, she was unsure about the world… and she soon became my best friend, my little shadow.

Fast forward 3 and a half months and she has grown into the most placid, loving, cutest little pea ever! She is playful but polite and a pleasure to share my life with. She snuggles in bed with my husband and i (much to his disgust) each and every night and gives me a reason to get out of bed each day.

The other day, I put her outside while i went to the shops and she was running around the backyard with her rope toy happily. When i returned 2 and a half hours later she was limping and visibly in pain… I called the vet and after checking her toes and pads, was told shes probably strained a muscle while running and to bring her in if shes still limping in 24 hours.

I got her in to the vet the next morning and $791 later, they tell me she has 2 breaks and a fracture… An injury consistent with being kicked or hit with something hard and that she requires surgery to fix it as soon as possible as the fracture is in a horrible spot. The fracture starts on her joing and goes all the way up towards her hip…

My poor little pea! Who could do this to an animal? If she was vicious or outside her yard or attacking someone i maybe could understand but she is the most placid and timid little thing… In nearly 5 months ive heard her bark twice… so she couldnt have been annoying anyone…

So i book in with the specialist vet and he tells me that there is no point doing the surgery as she is still growing and the surgery will only help for a few months and that my options are to amputate or put her down…

Putting her down is not an option for me. She has quickly become my best friend… and although it annoys me on occasion, shes my shadow, even when i need to pee… we sepend each and every day together minus a few hours here and there… She has quite literally saved my life… Its me and her agaisnt the world.

But is amputation the best choice for her? What happens? How does she walk? How long does she take to heal? Is her image going to affect me? Is it going to change her? Will she be depressed? Do they wrap or cover the wound? How long til she will walk again? Will she be the same little pea? Im so lost. Because it has been 4 days and she is on pain medication until surgery on Monday, she is walking fine..

I feel so conflicted.

I know if it heals it will cause more problems later and that she needs amputation but its so hard to fathom whiles shes her happy bubbly self walking fine…

Shes booked in to have the surgery on monday at 9am (like 10 hours from now)… im just a bit sad for her… And very anxious as we have only ever been away from each other for a few hours here and there..

You are such a lucky girl to find your way to really terrific parents.
